We connect research, policy, practice, and community voices to advance a broader understanding of community safety.

Our company was founded on a simple principle: safer communities are built through thoughtful strategy, meaningful community engagement, collaboration, and solutions that address the conditions that influence safety and quality of life. We help municipalities, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations, and community leaders develop practical, evidence-informed approaches to community safety.  The Exchange is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to advancing community safety as an emerging field of research, policy, and practice.  Our work brings together research, policy, community engagement, program development, technology, and data to help organizations understand challenges, identify opportunities, and turn ideas into measurable action. We bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, educators, and community voices to exchange ideas, examine evidence, and identify innovative approaches to creating safer and stronger communities. We focus on three interconnected pillars: housing and community stability, educational opportunity, and mental health and well-being. Shared knowledge. Collective action. Safer communities.

Founded by Dr. Maurice Vann, the Community Safety Exchange draws on interdisciplinary expertise in research, higher education, public policy, and community safety. His work has also included direct involvement in community-safety policy development, including participation on the New York City mayoral transition team focused on community safety. The Exchange brings together research, practice, and community voices to advance three pillars of safer communities: housing stability, educational opportunity, and mental health and well-being. Safety is not simply the absence of danger. It is the presence of conditions that allow communities to thrive.
